With direct measurements we confirmed existence of the giant electrocaloric effect in bulk and thin films of perovskite and polymer ferroelectric relaxor materials (PMN, PMN-PT, PLZT, P(VDF-TrFE). In thin PLZT films we observed the giant electrocaloric effect greately exceeding previously reported values in solid ferroelectrics. In thin films of irradiated copolymers we also found the giant electrocaloric effect exceeding previously reported values in polymer ferroelectrics. Results were presented at several international meetings, among them three invited talks.

In collaboration with researchers from Nanjing University, China, we made investigations of a new type of relaxor polymer system. Dielectric investigations of the reduced P(VDF-TrFE) copolymer have revealed that two similar types of dynamics coexist in the system – glassy transition in the amorphous matrix and relaxor behavior in the crystalline parts, the latter being almost identical to the behavior detected in classical inorganic relaxors.
