Synovial fluid of Mycoplasma synoviae infected chickens contains pro-inflammatory cytokines and autoantibodies.

In our previous studies, we demonstrated a strong effect of M. synoviae on gene and protein expression of macrophages. In this study, synovial fluids of infected chickens were analysed for presence of local autoantibodies against cartilage proteins. Preliminary results show presence of local autoantibodies against several proteins of chondrocytes and cartilage. Additionally, we performed a cytokine profile of synovial fluids of infected chickens and found presence of IL1-ß, IL-6, IFN-?, IL-18, IL-2, IL12 and IFN-?.

Mycoplasma synoviae induces cell death in chicken chondrocytes infected in vitro.

Direct contact of M.synoviae with chicken chondrocytes, induces activation of transcription in several pro-apoptotic genes in chondrocytes. Infected cells showed reduced viabilitay. Cell morphology showed characteristic signs of apoptosis, including nuclear condensation, formation of apoptotic bodies and vacuolisation of cytoplasm. Hence, M. synoviae causes chondrocyte apoptosis.
