In the framework of the project we have implemented paradigm of systems biology for studying of biological process. Besides analyses on transcriptome, proteome and metabolome, biostatistical and bioinformatical tools are being developed to facilitate analysis and integration of data. Systems biology approach has a substantial interest in the industry thus several contracts have been signed with pharmaceutical industry dealing with evaluation of drug production process and drug discovery. We are also members of Centre of competence KC-BRIN, offering the systems biology support to Slovenian biotech companies.
F.17 Transfer of existing technologies, know-how, methods and procedures into practice
COBISS.SI-ID: 2229327With the purpose of commercializing and developing knowledge in the area of modern molecular techniques in biotechnology and systems biology coming out of the National Institute of Biology, a spin-out company, Biosistemika d.o.o. was founded in 2010. Company’s services and products are aimed at providing complete solutions for users of complex laboratory analyses in the field of molecular biology. Since its establishment, NIB is collaborating with the company by organizing common qPCR workshops (COBISS.SI-ID 29465561) and joint development of molecular diagnostic products.
F.20 Company spin off
COBISS.SI-ID: 2363215Project group has made a great contribution to the popularization of science through publishing in the national language in the journal targeting the broad spectrum of the population [COBISS.SI-ID 562248, taking part in several radio broadcasts [COBISS.SI-ID 27882201, COBISS.SI-ID 29507801, COBISS.SI-ID 28366297 and COBISS.SI-ID 29507545] and 1 exhibition [COBISS.SI-ID 25092569]. Moreover they have actively participated in science popularization events at 17th Science festival (Ljubljana, October, 4-6 2011) and Plant Fascination Day (May 18th 2012).
F.18 Transfer of new know-how to direct users (seminars, fora, conferences)
COBISS.SI-ID: 562248Method for enhanced production of recombinant proteins in plants or plant cells solves a problem of complex protein production with fast, reliable and economically viable solution. Preferably in N. tabacum plants it is introduced at least one polynucleotide comprising a sequence coding a protein to be produced, and at least one polynucleotide comprising a sequence for at least one further modulating protein or polyribonucleotide which increases the cell-cell permeability of the target cells, preferably from group of glycosidases, or it is introduced at least one polynucleotide which comprises the sequence for protein of interest and a sequence increasing the cell-cell permeability of the target cells, preferably from group of glycosidases. Polynucleotide sequences preferably originate from plant viruses, preferably TMV and/or PVX.
F.33 Slovenian patent
COBISS.SI-ID: 2483279and its implementation in a serviceoriented data mining environment Orange4WS (Orange for Web Services), based on the existing Orange data mining toolbox and its visual programming environment, which enables manual composition of data mining workflows. The new serviceoriented data mining environment Orange4WS includes the following new features: simple use of web services as remote components that can be included into a data mining workflow; simple incorporation of relational data mining algorithms; a knowledge discovery ontology to describe workflow components (data, knowledge and data mining services) in an abstract and machineinterpretable way, and its use by a planner that enables automated composition of data mining workflows. These new features are showcased in three realworld scenarios.
