Zoonotic agents in different types of meat and meat products in Slovenia in 2008 to 2010

The main source of the microbes that cause zoonotic diseases in humans are the economic domestic animals. More than a third of all infectious diseases are zoonoses. Although the cause of the infection can be a direct contact with an infected animal or contaminated environment, the most common cause of illness is contaminated food. In Slovenia and elswhere in the European Union the most common zoonotic agents are the bacteria of the genus Campylobacter and Salmonella, followed by Yersinia, VTEC and Listeria monocytogenes. Not only the individual cases of the disease but also some major outbreaks of food-related infections are reported – the main cause is contaminated and insufficiently cooked meat or meat products.

Two members of project team have participated in organization of 5th Congress of the Slovenian Microbiological Society (M. Rupnik – president; M. Ocepek – member of Organizing Committee). Congress in held every three years and is the principal event where achievements on the field of microbiology are presented. 5th Congress was organized together with two other meetings and has therefore contributed to better international recognition and to improved collaboration between microbiologist and biochemists in Slovenia.
