It has been argued that in high modern societies sexual behavior has been increasingly decupled from the structured social inequalities. Being characterized by high level of reflexivity, sexual behavior is getting socially underdetermined and idiosyncratic. In contrast to this theoretical stance, the key argument is that sexual behavior is still socially “stratified”, although in a more subtle way. The reflexivity does not make sexual behavior “free-floating” as long as social resources which enable reflexivity (especially cultural and social capital) are unevenly distributed.
