The main feature of High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HIPIMS) high power is pulsed power supply, which generates pulses with a peak power of around one megawatt, but with duration of only a few tens of microseconds. At such a high power density, the target material is almost completely ionized, which enables the formation of nanocrystalline microstructure and superb adhesion. A millisecond-long pause follows the pulse, therefore the substrate temperature remains relatively low. Advantages of High Power Impulse Magnetron sputtering 1. control of ion energy and direction 2. improved adhesion of coatings 3. dense and fine-grained microstructure 4. deposition of thicker coatings. Different nanostructured coatings, prepared in this work by HIPIMS, show promising results in protection of cutting tools for machining of composite materials based on carbon fibers (CFRP).

COBISS.SI-ID: 25530663Practical examples are protection of tools for metal powder compaction (Unior, Zreče), drawing and fine blanking of tin coated sheet (Silgan, Ljubljana), dosage needles for pharmaceutical industry (Krka, Novo mesto). Th "black coating" is composed of the thick hard bottom TiAlN layer (microhardness about 3200 HV) and the top thin lubricant carbon-based layer (microhardness about 1000 HV). The bottom layer ensures a good wear resistance, while the top one has a rather low friction coefficient and low sticking probability for the workpiece material. The lifetime of tools coated with the black coating increases for 4-times in average.
