We found that dense bipolar pulsed plasma enables the deposition of crystalline high-temperature modifications od Cr-N hard coating. Using this technique we prepared a high-quality CrN hard coating at temperature less than 200°C. The mechanical properties of low-temperature CrN coating are good and it was successfully applied for some tribological applications. LT CrN was successfully applied for some tribological applications (protection of tools for pressing of ferrite powder in production of ferrite cores, tools for plastic processing).

We used for the first time 3D-profilometry and FIB for study of growth defects in PVD hard coatings. We found that the morphology on micro-and submicroscale is a consequence of ion etching and deposition, while macrofeatures (macrodefects) can originate either from mechanical pretreatment and cleaning or from deposition process. We found that the defect density strongly depends on deposition technique, deposition parameters.
