A detailed »in silico« analysis of regulatory elements in gene clusters for three tetracyclins was performed. Within chlortetracycline gene cluster, three regulatory genes were identified (ctc11, ctc13 and ctcR, from the LAL(LuxR), SARP and TetR family ), within oxytetracycline only two (otcR and otcG from the TetR and LAL(LuxR) family), and within chelocardin only one regulator (chdA from the TetR family) was identified. In the oxytetracycline gene cluster, a regulatory element otcG, was identified, cloned and its putative »conditionally-positive« role was experimentally demonstrated.
