During the in-stream gravel extraction the invertebrates are removed from their habitat, partly with gravel and partly they drift downstream. In this study we measured drift during the gravel extraction and observed how invertebrate drift change with the distance from the excavation and over the time.

In this study we observed how in-stream gravel extraction affects hyporheic invertebrate community, the hyporheic geomorphology, physico-chemistry of the interstitial water and biofilm activity. Invertebrate densities and taxonomic richness recovered relatively fast, while it took 5-7 months that invertebrates recover by means of community composition. The impact of fine sediments (<0.1 mm) on biofilm activity and hyporheic invertebrate density and taxonomic richness was strongly confirmed in this study.
