E. coli strains instigating sepsis in immuno-compromised patients harbor fewer virulence factors than strains from nonimmuno-compromised patients. Combinations of colicins employing different receptors, translocation systems and mechanisms of activity are effective antimicrobial agents.

COBISS.SI-ID: 739959Genes of the SOS system, responsible for DNA repair as well as for the evolution of antibiotic resistance, exhibit heterogenous expression within populations of genetically identical bacterial cells (same strain) as well as within the framework of genetically different E. coli strains. Due to differences in gene expression we can expect differences in the capability of individual strains to adapt to environmental stress.
