The aim of this short paper and poster was presentation of our nutritional study on Slovenian pregnant/lactating women and their new-borns to the European scientific community. Beside basic facts about the participants and study design, the partial results of microbiological and molecular analyses of biological samples collected from mothers and children (colostrum, milk, meconium, faeces) have been presented, including plate counting, real-time PCR quantification of selected bacterial groups and DGGE fingerprinting of microbiota.

COBISS.SI-ID: 3106440Healthy eating during the pregnancy, lactation and in the first year of life has long-term benefits on health. This phenomenon is called »metabolic programming«. Recommendations indicate the recommended weight gain during pregnancy as well as the basic principles of a healthy diet during pregnancy and lactation. We took the advantage of clinical experiences gained during the contact with volunteers participating in the project," through their questions and the mistakes that are most common in practice. The recommendations are evidence based, but presented in a simple and practical way.

Borut Bratanič organized the UNICEF 20 hour course for the Baby Friendly Maternity Hospitals health care personnel. The course took place in Ljubljana from 29.3. to 31.3.2012 and combined lectures with practical work. There were 98 participants from whole Slovenia. Dr. B.Bratanič also lectured about: 1) BFHI – part of global strategy and 2) How to make and sustain maternity hospital Baby Friendly.
