Ethics of life with the subtitle the view from within primarily relies on the theory of life as cognitive process of H. Maturana and F. Varela who extended the theory of complexity – or of general system theory – to biology. From the viewpoint of the monograph, this extension of the theory to the world of living complex systems is important because it shows how the immediate experiential material cannot be straightforward rationalized (universalized) in ideal norms and rules.

Folowing the philosophical line of thought from Hume and Leopold to Richard Rorty, the monograph tries to uncover which ethical model for human attitude towards the natural world would be the most appropriate. It finds this model in ethics based on the Hume's idea of 'moral sense' and with the help of Leopold's 'Land Ethics' extended to non-human moral subjects. The text critically examines some other possibilities of ethical extension, based on the search for 'common characteristics' of subjects that try to be included in the moral universe.

The paper traces a very imminent process: the changes in the PRC Party policy towards ecological issues in the last decade. It is based on an analysis of the shifts within the ideological discourse of party leadership. The most important steps analysed in this development, are Deng Xiaoping’s doctrine of »moderate wealth«, doctrine of »scientific development« and the central orientation of the last presidency period, namely, the doctrine of »harmonious society«. The analysis of the official formulaic discourse attempts to identify actual shifts in the environmental policy of Chinese leadership and to clarify, how these tendencies developed into the current trend in environmental policy, i. e. the doctrine of »ecological civilisation«. The second part of the paper is focused on the analysis of the ideological basis and implications of this new official doctrine. and shows how the application of this new concept is linked to two completely different referential frameworks: the context of eco-socialism/eco-marxism and the context of the official Chinese political movement for traditionalisation.
