Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) has become one of the leading technologies for rapid acquisition of elevation data. In this paper, we present a system for digital elevation model (DEM) construction from LiDAR data. First, we present a visualization technique that allows efficient representation of LiDAR data. For the purpose of the data segmentation, points can be projected on an arbitrary plane, parallel with Z axis. After the ground points are obtained, DEM can be generated. Usually ground points are re-sampled first into a required DEM grid resolution and then triangulated.

These positional numbers are then sorted and the differences between adjacent vertices are stored. Finally, these differences are compressed by an arithmetic coder.
