In the paper we develop a model for calculation of grain structure in continuous casting of steel. The model is based on Gaussian nucleation rule and KGT growth model. The growth model is coupled with the model of strand temperature field. A sensitivity analysis of all of the model paremeters with respect to the position of equiaxed to columnar and columnar to equiaxed tranformation was made. The results were compared with experimental data from Štore Steel (Baumann prints). Excellent agreement was achieved.

We implemented a parallel Differential Evolution algorithm for solving numerical multiobjective optimization problems using computationally demanding models for solution evaluation. The algorithm was tested in process parameter tuning in industrial continuous casting of steel where the decision variables are coolant flows in the secondary cooling zone, and the optimization objectives to be minimized are deviations of the liquid pool length and the strand surface temperatures from the target values. Optimization approach is efficient and suitable for practical use.
