Within the Genetic Susceptibility to Environmental Carcinogens (GSEC) group we participated in the developement of novel statistical approaches for assessing the credibility of the cumulative evidence of the association of common glutathione S-transferase polymorphisms and lung cancer. Despite substantial heterogeneity between studies, the meta– and pooled-analyses confirmed a significant association between GSTM1 null and lung cancer.

We introduced the methods for genotyping of polymorphisms in base excision repair genes. Our results indicate that hOGG1 in XRCC1 polymorphisms are relatively frequent in healthy slovenian population. We also used the comet assay to study DNA damage and observed that DNA damage is modulated by hOGG1 Ser326Cys polymorphism. Our results indicate that hOGG1 and XRCC1 represent interesing candidate genes for furher investigations in relation with the risk of asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma in asbestos exposed individuals.
