Plasmonic resonance on a surface of a metallic nanoparticle induces strong electric near-fields, which influence optoelectronic properties of a semiconductor photocatalyst that is coated over such a metallic nanoparticle. We have investigated this influence with the theoretical study on model halide systems and shown that the near-fields can induce a significant reduction in the band gap of the semiconductor. This would shift the absorption of solar light towards lower energies, i.e. towards visible light.
