An experiment on hydrogen combustion was performed in March 2012 at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany). In the HYKA A2 cylindrical vessel, with a volume of 220 m3, a homogeneous mixture of air (68 vol.%), steam (20 vol.%) and hydrogen (12 vol.%) was established at pressure 1.5 bar and temperature 92 C. The mixture was ignited at the bottom of the vessel in the centre, so that the flame propagated vertically upwards and horizontally in the outer direction. The maximum pressure was 5 bar and the maximum temperature 1020 C.

A benchmark exercise for lumped-parameter codes was organized with the experiment on hydrogen combustion, proposed by the Jozef Stefan Institute and performed at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany). Apart from the organiser (JSI), the following organisations also participated in the exercise: NUBIKI (Hungary), UJD SR (Slovakia), RSE (Italy), LEI (Lithuania) and AEP (Russian Federation). The following codes were used for the simulation of the experiment: ASTEC, COCOSYS, ECART and ANGAR. The benchmark confirmed the adequacy of the codes for simulation of hydrogen combustion in large-scale enclosures.
