He presented his results on medieval urban environmental history. He decided for a case study of Ljubljana. The river served as a transport artery as well as a source of water (drinking, hygiene, demand of artisans), food (fishery) and energy for different crafts (grain mills, saw mills, etc.). Wood for construction and fuel (heating, crafts) as well as as raw material was the second most important natural resource. It was harvested from the nearby forests. The areas in the immediate vicinity of the city were used by the citizens for intensive agricultural purposes (gardens, orchards, fields, meadows and pastures) and provided the city with the essential food supply.
