This paper introduces representative voltage samples that enable the calculation of flicker levels throughout the network. The shorter 1-s voltage samples are extracted from the instantaneous voltages measured and can represent the longer operating periods of an arc furnace. The calculation of flicker levels with the use of voltage samples is practical and eliminates the need for flicker measurements in an arbitrary network node. In addition, the flicker levels in nodes under the influence of flicker from multiple arc furnaces can be obtained without the use of superposition factors.

This paper proposes a time-optimal current control (TOCC) algorithm for a space vector modulation based voltage source converter. The dynamics of the proposed controller are compared with a non-linear hysteresis controller known for its good dynamic performance. For the two algorithms the response to a reference step change is observed using PSCAD simulations. Results show that despite its digital implementation and constant switching frequency, the TOCC algorithm in most cases provides faster transient responses than the hysteresis controller.

Characteristic compensation FACTS devices are described in the chapter Flexible AC transmission systems in the international monographic publication »The industrial electronics handbook, Power electronics and motor drives«. In addition to the description of basic semiconductor elements, series and parallel connections and modeling of FACTS devices are presented, followed by the application of FACTS devices in a power system, their rating and cost assessment.
