The dual is a grammatical expression of number in some languages (e.g. Slovene, Sorbian or Modern Standard Arabic) that denotes two persons or objects. In modern Indo-European languages, the dual is an archaism and one that has been preserved only in a small number of Slavonic languages: in Slovene, Upper and Lower Sorbian and Cassubian; in other Indo-European languages the dual has been replaced by the plural. This paper will present this specific grammatical category as preserved to the present day in Standard Slovene, Colloquial Slovene and various Slovene dialects, and enable more precise comparisons and contrasts to be drawn with the dual in all three forms of the Slovene language.

In the article, the word-formational semantics of noun derivatives in Proto-Slavic is discussed. The word-formational meaning of a noun derivative is, from the synchronic point of view, determined by its word-formational base(verbal root, verb, adjective or noun) as well as by the non-structural noun suffix, which conveys at least one word-formational meaning. The noun suffixes with multiple meaning are analysed from the perspective of semantic change, i.e. the direction of semantic widening of a single noun suffixe is adduced, when syncronically descernable.

The paper presents the history of Slovenian research for the Slavic Linguistic Atlas (OLA) in the context of the development of Slovenian linguistic geography. The theoretical and methodological impact of this international project has given rise to a profound modernisation of linguistic analysis and influenced the presentation of dialect material and changes to the phonetic notation system. The problem of adequate presentation of Slovenian dialect material in the OLA is analysed from a variety of different perspectives – from the density of network datapoints to the basic principles of the geographical presentation of linguistic facts.
