The energetic use of plant oil in engines (diesel engines on different road and off road vehicles, cogeneration units for the production of electric and thermal energy, ships, railways, etc.) is a current alternative to fossil fuels/mineral diesel oil. Pure plant oils cannot be applied directly into the diesel engines – a modification of the engine is therefore required. The efficient way of accomplishing this is the use of so called two-tank system. The two-tank system requires mineral diesel fuel (instead of mineral diesel oil biodiesel may be used) to start and heat up the engine and to use it before engine stop. The results of the use of such engine prove significant reduction of CO2 emissions, but shows slightly higher energy/fuel consumption and higher maintenance costs. Current national duty tax policy is one of the serious obstacles for wider production and use of the pure plant as fuel and currently national authorities does not recognize this as an attitude issue to the solved.
