The overall objective of the MINATURA2020 project (Horizon2020) is to develop a concept and methodology for the definition and subsequent protection of “mineral deposits of public importance”; to ensure their “best use” in the future in order to be included in a harmonised European regulatory/guidance/policy framework. GeoZS as the lead Slovenian partner has taken the initiative to raise the awareness of the professional public and authorised entities at the national level. GeoZS has prepared a list of mineral deposits, to be protected from potential urbanisation in the future. The main goal is to ensure a sustainable supply of the EU’s own mineral resources, reducing the dependence on external markets.

On the basis of public authorization for environmental monitoring, the Geological Survey of Slovenia produced for the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning an inventory of waste deposits from mining and other activities of mineral resource extraction within the territory of Slovenia, which represents serious adverse effects to the environment; or may in medium or short term become serious threats to human health or the environment. For classification and selection of waste deposits, which were included in the inventory, a special methodology was prepared based on risk assessment in accordance with the recommendations for the preparation of an inventory of other EU Member States. The project was completed on 24th February 2014.
