The objectives of the research were to examine the concentrations of metals in Vimba melanops and Rana temporaria and to evaluate the potential risks of the contaminated organisms to human health in Makedonska Kamenica region. Analyses identified high levels of Cr, Hg, Ni and Pb in studied animals, which also exceeded their permissible levels in food. The accomplished Health Risk Index disclosed that studied animals can have considerably high health risks for inhabitants.

The aim of this research was to determine how best to utilize two environmentally challenging types of waste: sewage sludge, and a particular type of waste ash, biomass ash. The results of the performed research have shown that liquid sewagesludge can, in fact, be successfully stabilized with biomass ash, so that a stable composite material can be obtained. During the stabilization process, the microbial activity of sewage sludge is inhibited, due to raised pH levels and temperatures. Analysis of the chemical composition of water leachates from samples of the composite showed that it is inert, and thus does not pose a threat to the environment.

Several geological and geochemical parameters were determined in the sediments of the 5th (5 J) and 6th (6 J) Triglav Lakes, Julian Alps NW Slovenia), in order to study the impact of natural catchment characteristics and anthropogenic activity. Fish were introduced into both lakes in 1991 and a mountain hut lies on the shore of 5 J. Considerable changes in four parameters were observed in recently deposited material, reflecting a shift in the trophic status of both lakes that was induced by the introduction of fish.

The Bay of Bakar is one of the most heavily polluted bays at the Eastern Adriatic. Three major industrial companies potentially endanger the bay. The concentration of major, minor and trace elements in surface sediments from thirteen stations was discussed in relation to the sediment type and foraminiferal assemblages. The distribution of major elements in the bay is influenced by geological nature of surroundings. Heavy metal distribution depends on pollution sources and on amount of mud fraction: fine-grained sediments are enriched by them in comparison with coarse-grained ones. Heavy metal concentrations generally fall into allowed depositional values for marine environments; only area in front of the coke plant and the City of Bakar harbor is heavily polluted. Stress-tolerant foraminiferal species dominate at stations with higher concentrations of heavy metals.

The Vodice fault located in the Ljubljana Basin (Slovenia) was investigated to decipher its activity and seismogenic potential with a detailed geomorphological analysis of its 10 km long fault scarp and field surveying. Preliminary results suggest the Vodice scarp is a surface expression of an active thrust fault that has been active during the Quaternary with an estimated slip-rate of 0.1 to 0.4 mm/yr in the last 115 ± 32 thousand years. By a simple scaling relationship estimate, an earthquake of magnitude 5.9 to 6.5 may be expected on the Vodice thrust fault. First estimates of seismic hazard induced more extensive on-going investigations.
