To gain insight into the responses of sensitive bacterial populations to colicin M in the natural environment and when applied as an antimirobial agent we studied the response of an E. coli strain to ColM subinhibitory concentrations on a global gene expession scale using DNA microarrays and physiological tests. Transcriptomic analysis showed increased expression of envelope, osmotic and other stress responses, including the two-component system CreBC genes, genes for extracellular polysaccharides and decreased expression of genes for motility. In addition, expression of the colicin K, cka gene was studied and found that protein IscR stabilizes protein LexA at the promotr and by cooperative binding of two LexA dimers induces a lag in transcription following induction of the SOS response.

COBISS.SI-ID: 773239Strain ŽP is a modified probiotic strain Nissle coding for synthesis of the E7 bacteriocin on a conjugative plasmid and immunity against the E7 bacteriocin on the chromosome. The colicin destroys pathogenic E. coli strains following conjugal transfer of the plasmid. The described strain bypasses resistance against the antimicrobial agent.
