The first ever European Red List of Habitats reviews the current status of all natural and semi-natural habitats and highlights the pressures they face. Using a modified version of the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems categories and criteria, a unique set of information underlies the Red List for every habitat: from a full description to distribution maps, images, links to other classification systems, details of occurrence and trends and lists of threats with information on restoration potential. The Red List covers a much wider set of habitats than those legally protected under the Habitats Directive.

COBISS.SI-ID: 41014317Results of phytosociological investigations in last years are summarized in five expert monographs (COBISS ID 287380480, 279568384, 273564928, 273564928, 265170688, 270705664), which describe less known forest and shrub vegetation types in Slovenia. They include data about synsytematics, distribution, ecology, species composition, importance for forest management planning and nature conservation of selected forest site types. The books are copiously illustrated to enable foresters, agronomists, landscape architects, geographers and others to recognize various types of forest vegetation, which is largely included into the Natura 2000 network.

COBISS.SI-ID: 287380480Spider silks are the toughest biological materials and hold immense promise to inspire a new generation of high performance synthetic biomaterials. In the rainforests of Madagascar, Darwin’s bark spider (Caerostris darwini) spins giant orb webs across rivers and lakes using a silk that is far tougher than that produced by any other known spider. This species was discovered and described, and its ecology and natural history were additionally researched by institute researchers. Recently, we were approached by BBC to consult their filming of a documentary about this spider. This outreach resulted in a documentary and a book.
