his paper deals with reactive power compensation and harmonics elimination in medium-voltage industrial networks using a hybrid active power filter. It proposes a hybrid filter as a combination of a three-phase, two-level, voltage-source converter connected in parallel with the inductor of a shunt, single-tuned, passive filter. This topological structure greatly decreases the voltage and current stress over the elements of the active filter. We propose using a proportional-resonant current controller for driving the active part of the filter. Theoretical analyses and simulation results obtained from an actual industrial network model in PSCAD verify the viability and effectiveness of the proposed hybrid filter. In addition, the simulation results are validated by a comparison with the results obtained from a real-time digital simulator.

In this book chapter, different STATCOM control algorithms are introduced. The algorithms are derived on the basis of STATCOM mathematical models in the α-β coordinate system and in the synchronously rotating d-q coordinate system. In the first part of the chapter, both mathematical models are derived from the three-phase STATCOM model, and the mathematical process is described in detail. In the second part, four different control algorithms are described: d-q control algorithm for balanced and unbalanced conditions, time-optimal current-control algorithm and Proportional-Resonant (PR) multi-loop controller.

In this paper, the influence of the economic downturn on the national security of electricity supply is analyzed, using the proposed methodology for an integrated assessment of the security of electricity supply. It is composed of an integrated model, featuring the security of electricity supply performance indices of the distinct dimensions of a power system. An aggregated index for measuring the security of electricity supply is constructed on the basis of three distinct dimensions: the security of the primary energy supply, the environmental performance and the power system reliability. Using the proposed index, the security of electricity supply for Slovenia is calculated, before and after the economic downturn, highlighting the key drivers and their influence on the security of electricity supply.
