The paper presents first preliminary results from the project Sexuality of secondary school students in Slovenia: behaviour, health, and attitudes. The authors focus on attitudes toward LGBT persons and social distance toward HIV+ persons with stress on diffferences by gender type of residence (urban/rural) and type of school (vocational/grammar schools). The results show that there is still considerable social distance toward HIV+ persons, which increases with social closeness. In general, the percentage of those who would not have an LGBT person as a neighbour is lower than in the general populations but there is a relatively surprising difference by gender.

COBISS.SI-ID: 34447197The paper deals especially with public reach of different publications on sexual behaviour in Slovenia. The authors base the paper on the thesis that a quite larger reach of lay writings on sexuality than scientific ones cannot be explained solely by unpretenciousness or even deliberate content bias of lay writing. Considering the fact that compered to scientific writing, lay writing cannot and does not even want to strive for methodological rigour and analytical depth it can neither be blamed for sensibility and inventiveness in collecting information about aspects of sexuality that are often overlooked by "official science". Apart from that, apriori rejection of lay publications' efforts to as large as possible audience is unsubstantiated. Scientific research on sexuality (and not only sexuality) is too often satisfied with only "publications", but is not interested in broader public reach of such publications and their possible societal and cultural influentiality.

COBISS.SI-ID: 34568285Kuhar in the review of the monography "First and third year secondary students' attitudes toward sexuality" states that the study in the context of the school field does not bring significant new findings since it only confirms the results of previous research. Nevertheless, it brings important insights related to the nonsystematic treatment of sexuality in the Slovenian school system. Clearly stated wish and need of the study participants for introducing systematic school-based sexual education into the school system shows that actions such as "Proud of my gender" are insufficient and actually harmful, because they are based only on declarative statements whereas students stress that they mostly need practical and realistic advice regarding sexuality and sexual life.

COBISS.SI-ID: 268685568Reviewer, A. Švab, stresses that book represents an important contribution of sexual behaviour and attitudes toward sexuality in the population of secondary-school students. The quality of the book lies in careful analysis and reflection of the analysed topic. Based on the empirical data, the authors confirm the well-known idea that systemic programme of school-based education is needed.
