The author in popular style presents the formation of “subcultural” identities through creativity of a very productive alternative music and art scene in Maribor in the 1980s (especially through the work of Mario Marzidovšek). The key accent of the essay is that a very small scene may become extremely prolific, if a couple of creative individuals meet who know how to put together common experience with preservation of internal differences.
F.29 Contribution to the development of national cultural identity
COBISS.SI-ID: 9813022The lecture provides reflection of post-socialist present, when attention is given to past and present use of musical expression in National-Liberation Struggle, its iconography and contents, which used to figure importantly in public discourse (as well as in dominant ideology), but after the fall of Yugoslavia, and throughout of the 1990s, they became unwanted, unimportant, redundant ‘junk’ of the past. In the present, these contents acquire new interpretations, new manifestations, which place them in public space between alternative and mainstream cultural production. Due to various references (as well very ambivalent, controversial, unexpected) of such music in public discourse the lecturer poses the question of value and meaning of those contents and topics in the present.
