The paper discusses the increasingly prominent and widespread process of teaching and learning Slovene as a second/foreign language (SSFL) among the adult population living along the Italian border with the Republic of Slovenia. The paper presents the findings of an empirical study, which included 374 SSFL course participants. Particular attention is devoted to the analysis of the participants’ reasons for learning SSFL, to their expectations upon enrolment in the course, to the language skills acquired and to the application of these language skills in everyday life.
