The paper offers insight into the emerging phenomenon of “cross-border residential mobility” (CBRM) in the Italian-Slovenian borderland. After an attempt to provide a theoretical framework for CBRM, the author presents the results of a survey carried out among 126 Italian citizens who have moved to the Slovenian Karst. The analysis of these empirical data allows us to obtain knowledge about a scarcely studied phenomenon and to verify the congruencies with the suggested theoretical framework.

The author deals with the general scientific treatment of this definition and outlines the understanding of the phenomenon of national minority in the 20th century in Slovenia. She is especially interested in modern politological-legal definition of »national minority in Slovenia« in relation to the dissolution of the former joint state. She argues the urgent necessity and usefulness of the definition for the state, critically presenting disagreements between Slovene experts.
