Progress on understanding atmospheric mercury hampered by uncertain measurements

An article was published in the Environmental Science and Technology indicating that understanding of atmospheric chemistry is hindered by poor analytical methods.

The removal of Hg(II) ions from aqueous solutions by using thiol-functionalized cobalt ferrite magnetic nanoparticles

A thiol modified cobalt ferrite magnetic nanoparticles synthesized by co-precipitation method and surface modified by Stöber method, has been investigated as a convenient and effective adsorbent for Hg2+ ions. The characteristics of these particles are assessed at different stages in the production process using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and magnetomety (VSM). It was found out that the pH value of model solution, mass of adsorbent, the temperature and the time of adsorption influences the sorption of Hg2+ ions on the thiol functionalized cobalt ferrite nanoparticles significantly.
