We designed and implemented a software package for online identification of motor unit discharge patterns out of noninvasively recorded high-density surface electromyograms. The implemented identification procedure consists of two phases. The calibration phase automatically calculates the linear minimum mean square error estimators of motor unit discharge patterns in the investigated muscle. In the second phase, the identified motor units are highly efficiently tracked online by using only 20% of the computational power offered by today’s personal computers. The software is a worldwide novelty as it provides, for the first time, immediate and very detailed insight into the properties of peripheral nervous system and also into the amount of information that can be extracted from acquired surface electromyograms. It, thus, constitutes the first, but crucial technological step into the rapid and accurate assessment of contractile properties of human skeletal muscles.
