The project leader gave a lecture at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (Maryland, USA), in which he presented the biotechnological potentials and health hazards presented by some groups of extremotolerant fungi. In the biotechnological part of the lecture he also presented the results of the postdoctoral project. During the visit the project leader also led a one day hands-on workshop in basic genomics [COBISS.SI-ID 3698511].
B.05 Guest lecturer at an institute/university
COBISS.SI-ID: 3698255The project leader gave the main interview for the popular science radio programme on fungi from extreme environments. The programme was broadcast on the Slovenian national radio.
F.35 Other
COBISS.SI-ID: 3650127The project leader supervised the work on one master thesis and one graduation thesis [COBISS.SI-ID 1536424643], both with the aim of improving the traits of Saccharomyces cerevisiae that are important for ethanol production.
D.10 Educational activities
COBISS.SI-ID: 1536625347The project leader collaborated in the analysis of the genomic and transcriptomic sequences of four varieties of the halotolerant yeast A. pullulans (var. pullulans, melanogenum, subglaciale, namibiae). Slovenian researchers had a leading role in the sequencing project. At the here described congress the project leader had a lecture presenting the opportunities arising from the genome sequencing of these organisms in biotechnology, agriculture and medicine. From the start of the project the project leader co-authored fifteen reports at various scientific meetings (at which he personally gave six lectures and two poster presentations). Additionally, he gave a public lecture titled »Fungi of extreme environments: adaptations, hazards, use« [COBISS.SI-ID 3262799].
B.03 Paper at an international scientific conference
COBISS.SI-ID: 3233615The project leader authored several critical opinions and letters to national media. In the cited letter he argued that the reception or rejection of genetically modified organisms should be made on scientifically verifiable data and not on prejudice, unfounded assumptions and pseudoscience. Other publications focused on the conditions and relations in science include two essays in journals of national importance, an interview at the national radio station and co-authorship of a letter published in Science [COBISS.SI-ID 3107151, 3233359, 3061327, 3125583]. He also reviewed a textbook for elementary schools [COBISS.SI-ID 273981696].
