COBISS.SI-ID: 10825556The chapter is dedicated to urothelial cell membranes with their unique specialization named urothelial plaques. The first part of the chapter deals with structure and composition of urothelial cell membranes with emphasis on its major transmembrane proteins uroplakins. In healthy individuals urothelial cell membranes contribute to tightest barrier in the body preventing the exchange of substances between urine and blood. For proper functioning of the urothelial cell membranes their biosynthetic and degradation pathways must be highly regulated and coordinated. In the second part of the chapter the involvement of urothelial cell membranes in various urinary tract diseases, such as vesicoureteral reflux, cystitis, urinary tract infections, and urothelial carcinoma, is discussed. Throughout the chapter we point out microscopic methods, which are most appropriate for urothelial cell membranes investigation and at the end we provide a brief summary of each method.

COBISS.SI-ID: 31309017Original research and review articles published in this special issue bring new knowledge and discussions on the complexity of urinary bladder wall structure/function and communication between different types of cells/tissues of the bladder wall. The articles reveal the importance of research for understanding many urinary bladder-related diseases and symptoms (cystitis, bladder pain syndrome, overactive bladder, inflammation, and neoplastic growth) and also suggest possible treatments for these conditions.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1586860From April 3 to 4 2014, the research group at the Institute of Cell biology has organized a workshop »On being a Scientist: Essential Skills of a Biomedical Investigator« by Prof. Tung-Tien Sun (New York University, USA). The workshop – the first of this kind organized in Slovenia, was focused into practical issues and skills of how to do research in order to survive and to excel in doing research. The workshop was intended primarily for graduate students, post-docs and early-stage investigators and turned out to be a very successful: 286 participant from 15 faculties, institutes and hospitals coming from 3 countries attended the workshop and 99 % of them would like that such workshop would be organized again.
