The Bosnian Mountain Horse is the most important indigenious horse breed of the Balkans and represents the most typical small horse of the Balkans. The Bosnian mountain horse were used fort the type of horses country-bred in the area of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its surroundings, where this type of small horse prevailed. The horses were breed purely only at state-owned studs. The genetic examination of the core population of Bosnian Mountain Horses supplement classic, traditional selection methods used in horse breeding. In population genetics, the use of highly informative genetic markers is possible, allowing the reconstruction of the history of the origin of populations and the determinations of the relationships between populations. We collected the necesary material at the studs in Bosnia and Herzegovina and studs in Slovenia. Informations of breed collected in the past are supplemented and developed using new genetic methods and approches. Based on the results of these examinations the Association set the breed standards and applied them in their efforts to preserve the breed. Results are shown on the critical threat to the breed and on high time for beggining of working on genetic material preservation, which is currently maintained.

COBISS.SI-ID: 3649416The textbook Antibacterial Drugs in Veterinary Medicine written by Silvestra Kobal and Tomaž Snoj provides students of Uniform Master's Degree Study of Veterinary Medicine information, necessary for understanding antibacterial therapy. In general part of the textbook, following topics are described: the mechanisms of action of antibacterial drugs, interactions between different drugs, development of bacterial resistance, assortment of antibacterial drug in the therapy and adverse effects of antibacterial drugs. Additionally, guidelines for prudent use of antibacterial drugs are described in details. Furthermore, groups of antibacterial drugs are described in separate chapters. In each group, the most important compounds, their mechanism of action, antibacterial spectrum and pharmacokinetic properties are described. Adverse effects and drugs’ interactions are mentioned for each group of antibacterial drugs. Practical use and dosages for different species and categories of domestic animals are stated also. Every chapter ends with a list of references where reader can find additional relevant information. The text was reviewed by three experts; one microbiologist and two pharmacologists. Because of the described topics, information about available drugs and their clinical indications, this textbook is of use for colleagues who work in the field of animal treatments or food safety as well as for the undergraduate students.

COBISS.SI-ID: 282319360During her annual visit at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California-Davis, where Ana Nemec serves also as a Research Associate, Dr. Nemec presented a guest lecture »Etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal diseases« to faculty, residents and students. In the 50-minute lecture Dr. Nemec covered recent discoveries in oral microbiology of dogs, biofilm formation and periodontal diseases.

COBISS.SI-ID: 4068986Accreditation of the procedures for laboratory testing is important for the recognition of the results when testing official samples. For some testing of official samples the accreditation is required by European regulations, however, for breeders and producers the recognition of laboratory results is important because it allows the possibility of trading in foreign markets. In 2015, auditors of Slovenian Accreditation together with auditors from abroad audited the adequacy of the implementation of two methods: genetic typing of the prion protein gene (PRNP) using the allele discrimination assay to evaluate the susceptibility to scrapie and identification test of horse DNA in raw materials and foodstuffs. The method of genotyping has been developed in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology and Molecular Genetics, and allows the breeding of sheep that are resistant to the classical form of scrapie. This is to prevent scrapie in in Slovenian sheep breeding farms, in addition, it has enabled the trading of sheep with known genotypes of PRNP. The method for detection of horse DNA in raw materials is important for producers, which check the raw material before the production, with the results of the testing after food production they declare the customers the suitability of the products in respect of the original species. Accreditation for the species identification was demanded by food producers because it allows them to adjust technology of production, the acquisition of appropriate raw material and it enables them trading of finished products in domestic and foreign markets. At the external audit several minor non-compliances were identified, all of which were resolved within the agreed period of two months. Adequate performance of both methods was confirmed by a foreign auditor and by the Slovenian Accreditation.

Primož Klinc is the secretary of the European Society for Domestic Animal Reproduction (ESDAR) and member of the organizing committee of the ESDAR annual conference. The Association is a non profitable community that unites European researchers and experts in the field of reproduction in domestic animals and wild animals as well. In addition, it also includes members from many non-European countries, which a sign of its global importance. The society supports all activities to stimulate education and research in the field of reproduction, especially for research and clinical work, biotechnology and physiology of animal reproduction. The society provides a College of Theriogenology (ECAR – European College of Animal Reproduction). ECAR ensures sustained pan-European education in the field of animal reproduction. After completed training and passing of the exam participants of this program can become European diplomats in the field of animal reproduction. ESDAR society organizes a number of meetings and workshops. Once a year society organize the annual conference, attending between three and six hundred researchers and experts in the field of reproduction of animals from all around the world. Primoz Klinc, is actively involved in the preparation of the scientific program and together with the local organizing committee participates in the implementation of the conference. ESDAR also promotes cooperation with other national and international associations, thereby contributing to the development of veterinary, medical and animal husbandry profession in the world.
