If the social work in health care was established in some places in the world already at the beginning of the 20th century, we may place the beginning of social work in health care in Jugoslavia from the 1960’s onwards. In Slovenia, social work in health care has been mostly set up as a profession that supports the primary (medical) activity and therefore represents a secondary model. The weakness of such a model is that the social work profession is often bereft of professional credibility by other professions in health care which tend to minimize the contribution of social workers and their autonomy, and determine their professional frameworks of action. At least in some areas of health care, such as the areas of mental health or addiction, such position seems especially unjustified, since social work in these areas has developed rather specific methods and recognized practices more often in non-institutional settings.

COBISS.SI-ID: 276708096The aim of the paper was to present an EU project Access to Justice for Children with Mental Disabilities (DG Justice, 2013-2015). The project partnership has a geographical spread across the EU, with 10 partnership members. The project aims to ensure access to justice (in administrative, civil and criminal legal domains) for children with mental disabilities. It seems that neither the people that were writing the law, nor the people that were then trying to do important steps towards children friendly justice, had in mind children with mental disabilities. Children with intellectual disabilities and mental health issues remain virtually invisible in the eyes of the law. Little, if any, support is provided to children to help them understand very complex justice systems, let alone children in need of extra support and assistance. Police, judges, lawyers, care workers and other professionals in justice systems are rarely given training on children with mental disabilities needs and rights.

COBISS.SI-ID: 4188261Deinstitutionalisation in Slovenia has a long history, many things happened in last decades but we are still far from the systemic solution and closure of the big institutions. As the European Union is making the deinstitutionalisation its platform there are opening of making a major shift. However, we must consider deinstitutionalisation in the light of social movements of today and also as a challenge to make a better society possible. Within the deinstitutionalisation we must explore how to bring people together for common good. Seek to establish cooperative efforts and reconstruct the communities. Deinstitutionalisation can be an instrument of (re)inventing solidarity in the new forms and to formulate a sublime community of humankind that will transcend the boundaries of social clubs.
