The analysis of the public opinion was carried out by telephone interviews with the randomly selected adult citizens of the Republic of Slovenia in proportion to the statistical regions. 11783 calls were made (1004 polls successfully completed). The questionnaire consisted of 21 close-ended questions regarding the opinion on the National Forest Program and the indicators. The agreement of the public was defined as a simple majority of the respondents (50%). According to 62% of respondents, the state of Slovenian forests has deteriorated over the last decade, only 6% of the respondents thought that the situation has improved compared to the past. Today's situation of Slovenian forests was assessed as sufficient (30%) to good (46%). Today's status of protected plant and animal species was considered to be similar to that of a decade ago (49%), and one-third believed that the situation has deteriorated. The majority (80%) considered that forest cover is just sufficient. Half of them believe that the areas of protected forests is also sufficient (48%), 39% believed that such forests are not enough. According to the two thirds, the current wood stock is appropriate, there are more those who considered it to be too large than those, which considered it to be too small (19%: 14%). The harvesting rates were considered to be appropriate (47%) or excessive (35%). There was a lack of consensus on the following topics: wildlife damage, the state of protected plant and animal species, the law on the prevention of fragmentation of private property, the area of protected forests and the share of state forests.
