Education of young experts requires special skills and has large socioeconomic impact as well. In 2015 four PhD students (Ljubetič, Garvas, Podlipec in Gregorčič) have defended their PhD thesis supervised by the members of this program. As in previous years, also in 2015 the creative process of supervision resulted in outstanding publications in addition to successfully defended PhD thesis. In 2015, we would like to emphasize the second biocompatibility paper of Rok Podlipec in ACS Applied materials and interfaces journal with IF=6.9. Supervision of the candidates is closely related to the LECTURINGOF VARIOUS COURSES AT ALL UNIVERSITY LEVELS (as course managers): Physics Laboratory 1 and 2, Measurement Techniques Laboratory 1 and 2 at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics (FMF), University of Ljubljana, Physics and Physics Laboratory at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology (FKKT), University of Ljubljana (Ales Mohorič), Didactics of Physics 1, 2 and 3, How Things Work, Project Work 1 and 2, Dissemination of Physics, Methodical Practical Course at the FMF and Technical Physics at the Faculty of Education, University of Ljubljana (Gorazd Planinšič), Nanobiophysics and Writing of Research Projects at the postgraduate program of the Jozef Stefan International Postgraduate School, Measurements in Physics and Introduction to Experimental Methods in Biophysics at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (FNM), University of Maribor, Interactions of Nanomaterials and Biological Systems and Advanced Experimental Methods in Biophysics at the 3rd Bologna cycle at FNM (Janez Štrancar), Molecular Biophysics (Janez Štrancar) and Basics of Imaging Techniques in Biomedicine (Zoran Arsov) at the 2nd Bologna cycle in the framework of Laboratory Biomedicine program at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ljubljana, Physics 1 for students of Technical Safety at FKKT, Physics of Anatomical Imaging at the 2nd Bologna cycle in the Medical Physics program at FMF, NMR in Biomedicine at the 3rd Bologna cycle at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Maribor, Use of Magnetic Resonance in Biosciences at the 3rd Bologna cycle at the Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana (Igor Serša). In addition to course management, we also assist in realization of a number of other courses. Moreover, we are very active in the preparation of university textbooks and teaching materials for students. D.10 Educational activities
COBISS.SI-ID: 280326144Development of novel medical devices confronts several conceptually difficult problems, like biocompatibility, bioactivity, bioinertness, etc. The lack of understanding of these problems prevents rational design of tissue implants. Our R&D work in the field of biocompatibility , has been supported by the activities within the international ERANET project nPOSSCOG ("NanoPOlySaccharide containing Scaffolds with Controlled pOrosity and deGradability", 2012-2015, IJS coordinator J. Štrancar) as well as within postdoc project of I. Urbančič coordinated by J. Štrancar and surgeon M. Drobnič from Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Ljubljana University Medical Centre. All these activities have been focused onto the search of a complex relation between biointerfaces related cellular response and physicochemical properties of 3D scaffolds. In this field, both the scientific as socio-economic results have been achieved, published in the paper of Rok Podlipec in ACS Applied materials and interfaces journal with IF=6.9 and converged into a novel fabrication technique joining freezethawing and in situ crosslinking. In collaboration with company Educell d.o.o. this technique will be used in the direction of in vivo scaffold fabrication. Such novel technology could provide noninvasive and efficient solution to the cartilage/ligament/meniscaltissue regeneration problem.

COBISS.SI-ID: 28884007Members of the program group actively contribute to the implementation, supervision and continuous improvements in didactics of physics and natural sciences on all the levels of education in R Slovenia. For example, A. Mohorič is the chair of the State committee for general matura in Physics as well as the member of the committee of the European network Horizons in Physics Education, http://hopenetwork.eu/content/horizons-physics-education project number 2013-3710_540130-LLP-1-2013-1-FR-ERASMUS-ENW, while G. Planinšič is professionally focus onto the didactical processes of teaching and learning physics and natural sciences as well as general problem solving. He published many scientific as well as other expert papers, such as in journal The Physics teacher.

COBISS.SI-ID: 2803556In 2010 we have signed a long term contract with the company Krka d.d that was valid also in 2015. Our role is to measure controlled release of a drug from a tablet with MRI. In the field of tissue engineering we have collaborated with Educell d.o.o. and developed gelatin scaffolds to replace defected cartilage tissues. With company Optotek d.o.o. we have started to build long-term strategic partnership with the goal that the Optotek company subcontract research and industrial research in the area of tissue-light interaction to the Laboratory of Biophysics, which is a part of our research program. Together with Optotek we have successfully applied for ARRS national call for applied projects scored exceptionally high with an average of 23.5 out of 25. The reviewers stressed that microspectroscopic characterization represent a ground basis for efficient optimization of the effect of laser light on the eye tissue. Two out of three evaluation scored above 24 out of 25 with comment that the microspectroscopically navigated special treatment can represent a major breakthrough in the field of age-related macular degenerations. At last, we are very active in marketing of our own (developed) technologies, especially n4AB (technology for surface disinfections) as well as in technology of coating of ferromagnetic nanoparticles, where member of our program group Stane Pajk is a cofounder of one spin-off company NANOS SCI ltd..
