Introduction of new research area in Slovenia "Nonlinear superresolution microscopy to monitor supramolecular structure changes in real time in living systems" is based on the recent investment into new 2-photon STED microscope with mwFLIM detector (0.9 MEUR), funded by Condensed matter physics department F5 IJS, ARRS call for equipment and H2020 SmartNanoTox project. Possibility to introduce new research area appeared due to first stable commercially available STED microscope in 2015, the need for supreresolved interactions between nanomaterials and cells within H2020 SmartNanoTox project and due to possibility that LBF and F5 build new optical labs and renew existing preparation labs in 2016. At the introduction of new research area, transfer of expertise in STED microscopy has been done via establishment of permanent cooperation with prof. Eggeling's group at Oxford University. Eggeling was involved in development of original STED concept as a postdoc in a group of Nobel laureate prof. Stefan Hell. Together with Eggeling's group we organised school on advanced microscopy techniques including STED. Introduction of new research area has triggered important results very soon - in just few months we 've been able to directly follow molecular event of lipid wrapping in living lung's epithelium, a phenomenon that was explored only indirectly for year before. The paper has been submitted into high-impact journal recently. New area and new equipment has been presented also during press conference in September 2017.
D.04 Initiative to set up a new research area in Slovenia
COBISS.SI-ID: 30933031Within the frame of program P1-0060, project ARRS L7―7561 and project GOSTOP new modular development site has been setup n new optical labs to test various versions for smart ophthalmic devices. Within the research work at the end of 2017 we have unexpectedly discovered that the current FMS analysis can be modified to enable mapping of absorber molecules, which is usefull in identification of vessel leakage and which is the content of the recently filled patent application.
F.32 International patent
COBISS.SI-ID: 31223079An international workshop in Bled on NMR/MRI methods for the study of materials is organized annually. The organization alternates between German (Hirschegg) and Romanian (Cluj) in Slovene (Bled) partners. This time the workshop was organized for the second time in Bled. Throughout the last year we organised several events for efficient knowledge transfer as well. In September we hosted a three-day workshop “Exploring the molecular world by advanced fluorescence microscopy approaches” to present numerous research possibilities offered by the new 2PE STED microscope, installed within LBF/F5/IJS. The lectures and practicals were performed together with our collaborators from the University of Oxford. In October we organised the traditional “Days of Biophysics”. During short lectures, knowledge market, and interactive poster presentations we explored applications of biophysics in pharmacy. With lectures and practical demos we participated also at the international workshop “Cellular Imaging Techniques” in Turkey. Laboratory of Biophysics is coordinating the organisation of international Regional Biophysics Conference 2018 in Zreče (Slovenia), which host the regional biophysicists from Italy, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia and appears to one of the most important European biophysics events between two subsequent EBSA european conferences.
