The concept of the new explanatory dictionary of the Slovenian standard language defines the content and structure of the modern general monolingual dictionary of standard Slovene, currently being compiled at the Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovenian language. The dictionary will contain about 100,000 predominantly single-word headwords and even more multi-word lexical units, for which the description of their grammatical, semantic and other properties will be provided. New entries will be published yearly on the portal Fran, Dictionaries of the Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovenian Language ZRC SAZU. The concept was accepted and confirmed by the Scientific Council of the Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovenian language, the Scientific Council of the Research center of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and at the Academy of Sciences and Arts itself as well.

The purpose of the monograph Crossroads of Orthography which aims to present arguments for additions and changes to normative rules – is to encourage normative and orthographic activities in Slovenian linguistic society; to encourage public debate before the publication of the new normative guide; and also to find answers to the language and normative difficulties, which are not problematic only in terms of linguistics and orthography, but also within the wider social environment. In six thematic sections of the monograph, 27 authors of 22 articles deal with specific normative issues (capitalization and punctuation) as well as with other topics on different levels of grammatical description – phonology, morphology and word formation. The problems of orthography in other, often non-linguistic fields are discussed. In the last two parts of the monograph, the problems of lexicographic approaches to orthography and its relation to language culture are considered.
