The research programme is essential for running the undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana. With investigations from the fields of ecophysiology and genetics the research group collaborates with more technologicaly oriented groups providing them new methods in agricultural technologies and plant breeding considering especially production of healthy food and environmental protection. In investigations of air pollution impact on plants the research group chairs and coordinates the ICP Vegetation programme in Slovenia ( International Cooperative Programme on Effects of Air Pollution on Crops and seminatural Vegetation) which runns under the CLRTAP convention (UN ECE Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution). Data obtained are transfered to the European coordinator what is one of the obligations of Slovenia to the Convention. Since 1999 the programme leader is representative of Slovenia in WGE in Geneve (Working Group on Effects of the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution) under the same convention. Research programme members participate as experts in various investigations financed by state and local communities in the field of plant production and environmental protection. Investigations on effects of elevated carbon dioxide on agricultural plants and seminatural vegetation provide important data about the possible risks in agriculture due to climate change. With results on starch degradation in food production we participate in sheduling of healthy nutrition, exspecially for groups with special dietary demands. Very important are also results on glicemic index (GI) of buckwheat and spelt wheat seeds and traditional foods produced from these plants in Slovenia, which could be offered to special groups of guests (termal spring turism,..). Using interdisciplinary approach in investigations and production of medicinal and aromatic plants it was possible to establish the tracebility and quality controll from raw materials to end products. This enables development of this activity in Slovenia in future promising also economic development. Contribution in the field of scientific information in biotechnology provides solid basis for scientific, proffesional and pedagogic work in this field.
