Final report

The results of the research contribute to attaining the goals of the national economy and of environmental protection in accordance with the Forest development programme of Slovenia, Forestry act and commitment to international obligations (Rio process). Special emphasis is given to the following topics: a comparison of stand structure and plant species composition between virgin forest remnants and managed forests, and result considerations with regard to forestry planning, the virgin forest vegetation of the forest reserve Krokar, analysis of the decrease in the tending of young forests in Slovenia (causes, consequences and counter-measures), application of recent research findings in the field of selection forest management, priority estimation for tending of young forest stands using the multi criteria evaluation method, the inclusion of the concept of biodiversity in silvicultural practice, planning in selection forests (some characteristics, dilemmas, and suggestions), forest management planning and implementation of planned works, the concept of participatory planning, treatment of selection forests in forest management planning, the principle of sustainability in the forestry planning, analysis and spatial modelling of red deer habitat of south-western Slovenia in a raster GIS environment, vegetation requirements of the black grouse habitat (Tetrao Tetrix L.) in Pohorje MTS, occurrence of wood rot in the wild cherry, black alder, and the field ash (causes and effects), interdependence between site productivity and floristic composition in beech forests in Slovenia, changes in forest site productivity in the beech forests of Slovenia during the last decades, assessment of equlibrium in plenter forest and its importance and monitoring, protection of forest saplings from harmful insects (Homoptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera) and Mites (Acarina), influence of forest fires on entomofauna - mostly subcortical, in the Austrian pine monocultures (Pinus nigra Arn.) of Slovene Karst, organization of transport and travel expenses for workers in immediate forest management, counselling methods for forest owners in the field of effective use of wood as energy-producing raw material, factors and criteria affecting the choice of equipment used in extraction of wood in private forests, utilisation of equipment and economy of work performed by forest owners in their own forests, characteristics of the stand and soil damage in cut-to-lenght thinning, the suitability evaluation of cut-to-length in Slovenia in view of terrain and stand, technological aspects of wood harvesting in selection forests, work efficiency in mechanized cutting, operational planning in mechanized cutting, analysis of the intensity of allowable timber harvesting in the northern parts of Slvoenia with regard to introducing modern forestry technologies, life cycle assessment of products in forestry, the alterations of roadway shape after different modes of periodic maintenance of forest road, the influence of a road on increasing the forest yield according to a computer model calculation, analysis of forest quantities and species composition alterations using two different methods with comparision, selecting a wood transportation route with GIS technology, the role of forests in biodiversity conservation on the landscape level, the pan-european biological and landscape diversity strategy and the forest in Europe, public interest in development of Slovenian Forestry, spatial correspondence between physiographic factors, vegetation and land use in the Kočevje region, the development of forest inventory techniques in Slovenia, natural and artificial energy flows in forest and agricultural landscapes of Kočevsko, importance of preserved forests in agricultural landscape of the lower Goriška Brda, evaluation of the recreational function in urban forest.
