Final report

Slovenian wood working industry has an important share in a gross national income and especially in the Slovenian export. Slovenia is to a large extent afforested country and so, wood is Slovenian the most important sustainable resource of a special social meaning. In order that Slovenian wood working industry would may remain competitive in the global market, research and development investments are compulsory. Unfortunately, transition period in Slovenia resulted in discontinuation of R&D activities in majority of our wood processing enterprises. Large producers transformed into several small and medium enterprises (SME). These SME are at the moment still economically strong enough to be able to make R&D investments. Strategic advances of Slovenian wood sector could become operative only when own research and development is carried out, in the specific areas, characteristic for our conditions and where we are already internationally comparable. R&D in the field of wood science and technology is one of the rare field, where a substantial progress to achieve international level may be obtained by relatively low investments. Therefore, our investigations were focused into modernization of Slovenian primary and final wood processing. We set up a new base for introduction of technology that enables production flexibility, proper use of wood biomass, also the one of secondary quality, appropriate organization and product quality that must comply with economic and marketing criteria.
