Results of the research program effectively demonstrate that adoption of the proposed methodology in drug development in the preformulation as well as formulation phase is feasible. It is manifested in a decrease of the number of necessary experiments and at the same time in an increase of the efficacy of design and development of novel drug delivery systems for systemic and local drug application, such as tablets, pellets, microspheres, microcapsules, microemulsions, liposomes and nanoparticles. Pharmaceutical industry is for Slovenia of immense socio-economic importance. Production of high quality, safe and effective generic medicines of world-wide reputation, enables competition in all global markets. Novel drug delivery systems represent a research in addition to marketing niche with a very high added value enabling development and application of bioequivalent as well as bioalternative drug product with known chemical entities. Since every new molecule has to be incorporated in the delivery system during the drug development process, the research program is of special importance also for the inovative part of the slovenian pharmaceutical industry. Moreover, results of the research program and the developed methodology enable rational drug use and achievement of optimal clinical, humanistic and economic outcomes and therefore significantly contribute to the slovenian health care system.
