Halophilic black yeasts were first isolated from the solar salterns in Sečovlje, Slovenia as their natural environment. They represent an important enrichment in biodiversity in Slovenia. Knowledge of the mechamisms of adaptation to such extreme environments is important in preservation of this biodiversity. Our studies are of basic nature and are important in bringing new knowledge and development of new technologies. So far we have succesfully introduced in our laboratory restriction fragment-differential display method and heterologous hybridisation using S.cerevisiae DNA chip for the analysis of transcriptome of H.werneckii. We have also introduced modern methods for proteome analysis (2D electrophoresis in combination with Mass spectrometry)
