The basic knowledge of macromolecular chemistry can be used in several areas of chemistry, such as catalysis, materials, separation systems, pharmacy, food, environment. All these branches of chemistry are important for Slovenia from the research, as well as from the production point of view. The results of chemical transformations on high molecular systems enable the understanding and planning of new reaction systems with application of bioactive compounds (pharmacy, fitochemistry), environmental chemistry (new processes, chelants, reduction of pollution). Materials prepared by sol-gel technique offer new application possibilities or better materials for old applications. Electrochromic thin coatings on glass surfaces will have an important application in buildings construction in the future. A direct current of low voltage applied to electrochromic coating is used to control the coloring or bleaching of the window. Sol-gel synthesis offers the opportunity for preparation of new luminofors. Binding of metal ions to biological molecules has practical aspects in medicine. Aluminium overload in the human body, especially in renal patients, is related to many clinical disorders. Although analytical procedures have appreaciably improved in the last decade, speciation of aluminium in biological samples is still in a state of development. A reliable data on aluminium compounds have been obtained, that are important for diagnostics and in searching for genesis of diseases.
