The research programme is incorporated into the development of one of the main fields in the humanities which belongs to the so called "national sciences"; it stays in touch with the state of literary studies the world over, and, crucially, establishes new contacts. The contribution and achievements of the programme for Slovenia correspond to the basic aims of the humanities. In the past, they contributed to the emergence and development of a national consciousness and to the efforts for linguistic, cultural and political emancipation; now, in European Union, they are engaged in researching and maintaining the nation's cultural identity in the context of global processes of international rapprochment and cooperation. The programme's achievements have been published in various forms. Their value is particularly evident from the possibilities of its application. They bring new knowledge, open new perspectives and develop new methodological procedures which are applicable to further research in literary studies and in part to other philological and historical studies. They are mainly appropriate for inclusion into academic teaching, mostly in the fields of Slovenian and comparative literary and cultural history, literary theory and methodology, rhetorics, and the theory and history of theatre. This is already partly taken care of through the supplementary pedagogic activity of the members of the research team at the universities. Certain results and theoretical perspectives are also suitable for application at the high school level of teaching literature. Additionally, over time, the results of the research enter the work of essayists and journalists, and are incorporated into the public discourse of the past and current functions of literature and culture. Being a part of a wider systematic treatment of cultural heritage, they contribute to the maintenance and critical inquiry of the consciousness of Slovenian national, historical and cultural identity.
