Within the frame of the research program "Parallel and Distributed Systems", in the period 1999-2003, the following important results have been reached that could have a potential impact on the Slovenian development: Among the first in Slovenia, we have been building and using our own parallel computers, running our parallel programs and libraries for communication by messages (Message Passing Interface). We transfer technological achievements from this area into our research and industrial environment. Measuring devices and methodologies for the acquisition of biomedical signals have been implemented. Special attention was devoted to the measuring of electric potentials, that are induced by heart muscle on the human body surface, to the detection of small metal foreign bodies in the tissue, and to the measuring of surgical clamp pressure on small vessels. Cooperation on the area of secure information systems, by introducing and developing of Slovenian health card and by proposals of secure policy was evident. Computer equipment and hardware design of a video module for video stream acquisition (according to CCIRT standard), analog-to-digital conversion, wavelet compression and transmission via standard communication channels have been successfully finished. The acquired knowledge have been literally transferred to industrial partners, because the video module is in the production and marketing line of Iskra Transmission. With the colleagues from Clinical Centre, many experimental measurements of heart functions have been performed on volunteers (control group) and patients, in the period after heart surgery, on domestic and foreign medical institutions. Cooperation with the neurologist, on the area of EKG-periods variability as a consequence of external stimuli or various diseases, provided several new results in the field. Our research program results have been applied in industrial and governmental organisations, and have been transferred by pedagogical process also to students of technical and social sciences.
