The program is a synthesis of previous fundamental knowledge and of new findings on formal and semantic origins of Slovene lexical stock in the context of Slavic and neighbouring German, Romance and Hungarian lexical stock. Achievements of this programme are also a source of linguistic information for individual European national comparative linguistic studies (e.g. Germanic, Romance, Ugric), as well as for Indo-European linguistics in general. According to the research plan for this period comparative and etymological compilation of Slovene words beginning in š-, t-, u-, v-, z- and ž- has been carried out. In this way more than 1,700 entries were edited for the fourth volume of the Etymological Dictionary of Slovene, and together with the materials from before 1999 the publication should appear in 2005, provided that there will be no formal obstacles. Therefore actual achievements of this fundamental work will be most prominent in reviews, discussions, etc., in the year after the planned publication. Individual results of this research have already been presented partly in Slovene and foreign specialized journals (Jezikoslovni zapiski, Slovenski jezik/Slovene Linguistic Studies, Slavistična revija, Folia onomastica Croatica), partly at congresses at home and abroad (Brno 1999, Cerkno 2001, Corum 2002, Vukovar 2002, Ljubljana 2003) and included in the second, revised edition of the Slovene Etymological Dictionary (2003). Another important accomplishment of the programme is the publication of Collected papers on linguistics I-II (xxii plus xi plus 1572 pp.) by renowned academician France Bezlaj with etymological, lexicological, onomastic and linguogenetic articles, published in the period of more than 50 years. First positive reactions to this publications were noticed at the 13th International congress of Slavicists in 2003 in Ljubljana. Between 1999 and 2002 two members of this research programme worked with a group of Slovene researchers who contributed their share in a general Slavic project of Slavic onomastic encyclopaedia; the first volume was published in 2002 in Poland, including also the articles of both members. The journal Slovenski jezik/Slovene Linguistic Studies is regularly published in two-year intervals is important for preserving linguistic interest in Slovene at home and abroad. Other current projects, e.g. the Dictionary of Janez Svetokriški's language, the digitalization of Pleteršnik's dictionary and the education of young researchers, ensure a long-term and continuous etymological research in Slovenia, and permanent acquisition of new knowledge on our language even outside state boundaries.
