Research achievements of the Program group "Geography and regional development" are based on the internationally comparable methodology. They were presented to the international public by over 30 papers given at international symposia in Slovenia and abroad, such as three international seminars of the Department of Geography of the GI University in Frankfurt, four with the Geographical Department of the University of Zagreb and the Seminar of the Commission for urban geography of the International Geographical Association in August 2003, which was organised by our Department and where about 60 experts from all over the world presented their papers. Direct achievements are based on the expertise in specific climate in individual Slovene landscapes, with the Visoki kraški rob of the Trnovo forest pointing out, however also the knowledge about geoecology of olive tree in the sub-Mediterranean Slovenia is interesting. Socio-geographical achievements to be laid stress upon are the monography Geography of Ljubljana (2002) and a number of papers given at international symposia as well as publications at home and abroad referring to the social and functional structure of Slovene cities, development of cities and suburbanisation as the world process. The research results in relation to the Slovene countryside were presented at the international symposium in Ljubljana (2001), aiming also at representing a substantial contribution to the international methodology of researches of the kind in the "transition" countries.
